The Bronze Age village emerged out of the Mosul reservoir earlier this year after a major drought caused local waters to recede in the region.

3,400 year old city emerges from Tigris river
A 3,400-year-old 'lost' city emerged from the Tigris River in Iraq after a major drought in the area, prompting archaeologists to scramble to investigate before it disappeared again.
The international group of archaeologists found the old city in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
The city is believed to have been erected sometime between 1475 BC and 1275 BC when the Mitanni Empire ruled over the northern Euphrates-Tigris region, reported New York Post.
As the team of German and Kurdish archaeologists was able to reach the Mosul reservoir quickly, they discovered 100 ancient clay tablets. Further investigation revealed a mud-bricked wall settlement that consisted of a palace, multi-story buildings, several towers, and large structures.
According to a statement by the University of Freiburg, the city dates back to the Mittani Empire era, in the Bronze Age. It may have represented the ancient town of Zakhiku.
Zakhiku was all but destroyed by an earthquake around 1350 BC.
"The extensive city with a palace and several large buildings could be ancient Zakhiku – believed to have been an important center in the Mittani Empire (ca. 1550-1350 BC)," the university said.
“The huge magazine building is of particular importance because enormous quantities of goods must have been stored in it, probably brought from all over the region,” said Dr. Ivana Puljiz, of the University of Freiburg.
Reports say the site had previously never been investigated thoroughly by archaeologists.
"This good preservation is due to the fact that the city was destroyed in an earthquake around 1350 BC, during which the collapsing upper parts of the walls buried the buildings,"
